Last Autumn, my older daughter Sarah, she is 40, and my son Andrew, he is 33, were discussing how to do their first marathon, and decided on entering the Madrid Marathon taking place on April 24th, the same day as the London Marathon.
They mentioned that there was a 10k run as part of the programme, so I decided to go for that.

For the next several months Sarah and Andrew undertook a dedicated training programme, mine was rather more modest, and on Friday evening before the Marathon we flew to Madrid. The organisation was really good, the Madrid metro works well, and the weather was helpful, certainly for the 10k, although it was quite warm by the end of the Marathon. Andrew’s time was 4 hrs 5 minutes, Sarah was 8 minutes slower- an excellent achievement by both of them, and I completed the 10k in 67 minutes, which I was very happy with. Monday morning, Andrew took a bit longer than usual to walk to work but, that apart, everyone was fine. It was a truly memorable weekend for the three of us.
