KMPC Runners – 1000km to May

This is the full length version of the article previously published in the parkrun newsletter

In December 2015, Kirkpatrick Memorial Presbyterian Church (KMPC), in East Belfast, launched a parkrun initiative as a way of raising levels of physical activity & exercise throughout the Congregation. The concept involved making use of the nearby Stormont parkrun (and indeed any others in Northern Ireland) to encourage KMPC members to meet up on a Saturday morning and participate, building our local community and encouraging what we call “Life Together”.

Great Lines parkrun & Cornerstone Fit

About the author – Adam Voke, a Cornerstone Fit runner (also Cornerstone City Church lead-elder) has recently been awarded parkrunner of the month at Great Lines so he got a free pair of Asics Gel Kayano 21’s. Adam has been their most improved runner of late having shaved over 2 minutes off his time and breaking into the sub-20 times for a 5km distance with a PB of 19:53 recently.

I went along to the first ever parkrun, at the Great Lines in Gillingham (opposite Medway Park) in September 2013.  I slogged my way round the free weekly 5K run with a ‘hurty knee’, feeling a bit sick after tackling the (slight!) hill.  When I got home I felt like I had run a marathon!

Seventeen months later with fifty-four parkruns done, more than ten minutes off my time and the fitness level to run half marathons every few weeks I’ve grown to really enjoy running and I value the overall health benefits.

The Genesis: The Idea

A guest post from Running Church – Shrewsbury…

Over the past few months I have been asking God for inspiration and a new way to share life with others and also share the good news of Jesus Christ. I love to see others encounter Jesus.

My passion for running has meant that in the past year I have made many new friends and been connected to hundreds of people all over the country through running. I love talking about running, reading about it, watching and well racing too! But I also love supporting others to do the same.

But actually why not share two of my passions? Running and Faith in Jesus. 
Why not take an active step to merge the two?

I think this is what God is calling me to do…
